Dr. Haroon is a world-renowned rheumatologist, a Clinician Scientist at the University Health Network, a scientist with the Schroder Arthritis Institute & Krembil Research Institute and is an Associate Professor of Medicine and rheumatology at the University of Toronto.
He has received multiple awards including the prestigious Vanier Scholarship, the Jane Bruckel award of the Spondylitis Association of America, the Young Investigator Award of the Canadian Rheumatology Association and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.
He is the Vice President of the Canadian Rheumatology Association and the Chair of the Research Committee of SPARTAN. Dr. Haroon is well published in A level journals including Annals of Internal Medicine, Annals of Rheumatic Diseases and Nature Reviews Rheumatology and has authored chapters in several textbooks including the 21st edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. He is the Co-Director of one of the largest Spondyloarthritis programs in the world and runs a translational research program with a keen interest in identifying novel therapeutic targets for arthritis. He and his PhD student Dr. Akihiro Nakamura have filed a US patent following the discovery of a novel therapeutic target for spondyloarthritis. This study is slated to be published in the prestigious Science Translational Medicine Journal. Dr. Haroon also led the first international study that identified the disease modifying potential of TNF inhibitor biologic medications in patients living with ankylosing spondylitis.
Dr. Haroon has been an active AKMG member for many years and served as the secretary, VP and President elect. He was the Chair of the 39th AKMG convention held in Ottawa in 2018. Dr. Haroon is keen on transforming the membership experience and taking AKMG to new heights.
